SiME: Seminar Series on Simulation in Medical Education

As educational technologies emerge globally, applications of simulation are accelerating in more and more areas of medicine. Over 70 faculty and staff at Stanford University have expressed informally an interest in developing or introducing simulations into their training programs. Given this level of support, individuals sharing this mutual interest are likely to appreciate learning about the topic in a discussion forum with the following goals as delineated by W. LeRoy Heinrichs in September, 2001:

  • Introduce a forum for selected presentations and discussions about simulation in medicine;
  • Select speakers, by invitation, who are leaders in simulation
  • Focus presentation reports on diverse topics in cognitive and skills-based simulation, as exemplified by the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), with or without computers, the Interactive Simulated Patient (ISP), the E-Pelvis, CathSim, etc.;The evolving eHealth promotion via the Internet, and simulations over Internet2, and other broadband networks will be included as topics when speakers become available. The Anatomy and the Surgery Workbenches are examples of the latter topics
  • Topics will include simulations using physical models, virtual environments, or combinations;
  • Foster a regular, learning environment for sharing knowledge and for promoting collaborations;.
