Indexing

3300 biomedical, science, technology SCI (Science Citation Index) journals. Also indexes 1900 'Current Contents' journals.

Special Use

Uniquely provides both 'general' and 'cited' searches.

Cited searches identify later publications citing an earlier work. These citations include books, chapters, and meeting/conference reports. Track research ideas, particular papers, and their impact in published literature.

'Current Awareness' service via 'SciSearch ALERT' feature. Set up a stored search strategy & receive weekly literature search results.

Evaluating Indexes & Database

Literature search results provide valuable historical and current perspective, plus research data and analysis on topics. Indexing systems vary in what they cover. Some only index journals, while others include books, meeting reports, and dissertations. Also, some indexes may include publications directed to the lay person, while others focus on the scientific research literature. If you have interest in these indexes, ask a medical reference librarian about them. For this course, we concentrate on scientific literature resources.

Consider these aspects when selecting an index or database for literature searches:

Coverage Materials other than journals, including books, book chapters, meeting reports, and dissertations. Citation indexes included.
Subject focus Special focus possibly not covered in other indexes
Currency Timeliness of getting new materials added to the database. Historical perspective.

You may need both current and historical information on scientific research topics. Cutting edge research ideas or studies may appear first in meeting reports. Formalized study reports with peer-review are published in journal articles or possibly in books. Review articles (if done thoroughly and well) are valuable overviews of topics. Meta-analysis is a quantitative method of combining results of independent studies, then synthesizing summaries and conclusions in order to evaluate therapeutic effectiveness and plan new studies from the literature.
